Age-Adjusted Death Rate due to Firearms

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2018-2020
This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 population due to firearms.

Why is this important?

Firearm deaths include intentional use (e.g. homicide), unintentional discharge, and suicide. In the 1980s, gun violence became a national concern and continues to be serious problem to this day. According to the National Institute of Justice, initial federal gun crime prevention efforts focused on getting illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of urban youth. However, over 20 years of intervention research has shown that in order to reduce gun violence, efforts must address both the demand and supply of firearms. Successful interventions have elements of federal-local law enforcement collaboration, community involvement, and targeted intervention tactics.
